Charleston Sports and Recreation

Whether you like to participate or watch, Charleston has diverse sports and recreation choices for you and the entire family. Here's a partial list:

Water Sports and Recreation

If it involves water, Charleston has some of the best in the country.

Beaches - Charleston's beaches cover 91 miles of diverse terrain and small-town environments. Folly has rustic beaches and the best surfing around, while Sullivan's Island offers pristine white sand and calm blue water. So whether you want to hang ten, or just hang out, Charleston's beaches have you covered. And we haven't even mentioned Beachwalker Park on Kiawah, Isle of Palms County Park, or any of the private beaches along the coast.

Boating - If boating is your thing, Charleston is your place. Local marinas are filled year round with all types of vessels, and most waterfront residential developments offer options for boat storage and water access.

Fishing - Charleston is a fisherman's paradise, in part due to the complete diversity of fishing opportunities here. The beaches provide awesome surf fishing, as well as public piers like the 2,000 footer off of Folly Beach. Rivers and countless inlets offer an exciting combination of saltwater and freshwater choices. Lakes Moultrie and Marion give anglers on the interior of Berkeley County 171,000 acres of excitement. Golf

Coastal South Carolina has long been considered a Mecca for golf in the United States, and for good reason. The diverse terrain and mild climate create the perfect setting for beautiful scenery and challenging conditions, and some of the best golf courses in the world. In 1991, Charleston hosted The Ryder Cup at The Ocean Course on Kiawah Island. In 1997, the same course welcomed the World Cup of Golf. You can play The Ocean Course, or any one of 22 more public or semi-private courses in the Charleston area. There are also many private country clubs and golf course communities to choose from. Hunting

On the far north side of the Charleston metro area sits Francis Marion National Forest, a 250,000-acre wildlife reserve that attracts hunters from all over the southeast. Hunting seasons throughout the year include opportunities to go after white tail deer, feral hogs, wild turkeys, ducks, rabbits and squirrels. Professional Sports

If you prefer to watch sports rather than play them, Charleston has a multitude of choices for the spectator. Charleston residents have proven that they can offer professional teams the support they need to succeed in our community and become a part of the local fabric.

There's nothing better than having a minor league baseball team in your town. Fans flock to Joe Riley Park every summer to watch the Charleston RiverDogs fight it out with other Class A baseball teams in the region. The game experience includes much more than just on-the-field action, and is fun for the whole family.

Charleston's professional soccer team, the Charleston Battery, is an A-League Division II professional soccer team. The Battery is the closest to a major league professional sports team as we have in the area, regularly playing games against teams from the MLS. The Battery calls Blackbaud Stadium on Daniel Island home.

The South Carolina Stingrays is Charleston's professional ice hockey team in the East Coast Hockey League (E.H.C.L.). While you may not think of Charleston as a true hockey town, Stingrays games draw more than 6,500 people on average, proving to be one of the most popular entertainment choices in town.
